“Insurance is something that most people know they have to have but don’t know how important it truly is. It’s knowing that if something unforeseeable and devastating happens that you have taken the necessary measures to ensure you and your family are properly taken care of. It should be seen more as a safety blanket than a cost you wish you didn’t have to pay. When I interact with my customers, I make sure they know exactly what they are paying for and never pay for anything they don’t need. I like being an advisor for something that can be confusing if you don’t have the proper guidance. I like getting to know each and every one of my customers so we can build a bond and they will feel comfortable to come to me with any questions or concerns.”
“I liked the thought of working in insurance because it’s something that you need to have and I wanted to learn more about it.”
Delaine & Tara’s desire to provide service and quality within the insurance industry set them apart. “DON’T OVERPAY…CALL TIA!”

Celebrating Local People In Business Featuring Brad & Pamela Thompson
Brad and Pamela stated WellnessWithin in January of 2013. Their service helps people of all ages, all over the world. They have touched the lives of hundreds of people through in person and on-line workshops, speaking engagements, and one-on-one programs.
Name: Brad & Pamela Thompson
Owner Of: WellnessWithin (all one word)
Why and how did you get involved in your business?
Pamela – “For many years I struggled with anxiety, worry, overwhelm and low self-esteem and searched for something or someone who could “fix” what I believed was wrong with me. On this quest I read many spiritual books, took self-help courses and studied several energy therapies. I completed the full course in Reiki training, learned kinesiology, became a certified Healing Touch practitioner, and studied Quantum Touch. While I was studying the teachings of Abraham Hicks and the Law of Attraction, I was introduced to Quantum Physics which challenged much of what I believed was true about this world and myself. All of the searching I did lead me to realize that the answer I was looking for was actually within me, and I made many positive shifts over the years. However, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) was the first modality that enabled me to actually get to the root of much of the dis-stress I experienced and release it, resulting in greater shifts in a shorter time. My husband and I along with our 2 daughters took the EFT training together. He and I then went on to be certified, then continued to learn more and more energy modalities, incorporating them into our personal lives as well as our business. (Brad talks about that below.) It was a natural progression to share what had transformed my life with others.”
Brad – “After retirement as an educator in 2013, I became interested in how the mind impacts the body. I attended a workshop called, “The Mind/Body Connection” given by two physicians and leaders in the Mind/Body movement. Having seen firsthand how powerful the mind/body connection is, I started my quest to learn more so I could apply mind/body techniques to not only enhance my own emotional and physical health, but that of others as well. During the next several years, Pamela and I became certified by EFT International as Emotional Freedom Techniques Practitioners. We also trained in other powerful mind/body protocols such as Matrix Reimprinting, Intention Tapping, Optimal EFT, PSYCH-K, and more. We have been fortunate enough to study the works of some of the world’s leaders in mind/body medicine, including Biologist Bruce Lipton, Dr. Kim D’Eramo, Founder of the American Institute for Mind/Body Medicine, Gary Craig, Founder of Emotional Freedom Technique and Optimal EFT, Gregg Braden, Karl Dawson, Founder of Matrix Reimprinting, Dawson Church, Lynne McTaggert, and many more. Even before we developed our toolkit of mind/body skills, Pamela and I decided we wanted to share our expertise in a way that would positively impact the lives of friends, family and anyone else who was interested in taking control of their own health and well-being. Since starting our business, we have touched the lives of hundreds of people of all ages through in person and on-line workshops, speaking engagements, and one-on-one programs.”

Dawn opened River Valley Insurance Agency in partnership with Apple Valley Insurance. Her agency is located at 141 Brown Ave Jewett City, CT. Dawn’s dedication to her clients goes far beyond getting them the best rates possible for their insurance. Her personal touch sets her far above the competition leading to many of her clients becoming personal friends.
Name: Dawn Mattos
Owner Of: River Valley Insurance Agency, 141 Brown Ave Jewett City, CT 06351
“In my industry I have many competitors but I’d like to think my personal touch is what makes me different and is the reason I gain business leads. My motto is ENTER AS STRANGERS and LEAVE AS FRIENDS!!!”
“I was introduced to insurance just shy of 30 years where I took an entry level position within an insurance company. After many promotions and the drive to learn more, I transitioned from the insurance company side to the agency side of insurance. This is where I found my niche’ and obtained my insurance license in 2004.”
“For me, finding the right insurance is all about listening to both my client’s personal needs and their financial needs.”
“The desire to always do better and provide a service for others, is a positive reflection of my hard work and compassion for people. It is the personal touch and attention to detail that I feel separates me from others when selling insurance. Having solid knowledge and confidence to sell insurance allows me to make the client feel comfortable and to provide them with peace of mind that their personal belongings and assets are well protected.
After being in the insurance industry just shy of 30 years, I was presented with an amazing opportunity to partner with a long-standing insurance agency from Rhode Island – Apple Valley Insurance. This partnership allowed Apple Valley to branch into Connecticut and offered me better options for my clients with their wide variety of insurance companies.”
Dawn’s knowledge of her industry and her desire to be an active part of her community set her apart. Make your appointment with her at River Valley Agencyin Jewett City!

Celebrating Local People In Business Featuring David Mansulla
“Connecticut has the third highest electric rates in the country with only Alaska and Hawaii having higher rates …”
“I was a training manager, training others to run retail stores, and a customer service manager, training other managers how to provide customer service excellence, for many years. But times have changed and I had to switch gears because companies like Amazon have changed the way America shops. I wanted to transition into a business where I could use my customer service skills to help people solve some of their problems. For me, what jumped right out was the solar business. Connecticut has the third highest electric rates in the country with only Alaska and Hawaii having higher rates, so I jumped into the solar business working for someone else. This other company didn’t fit what I thought was the best way to serve employees or clients. They put their employees into a pressure cooker to get results and it wasn’t the environment I wanted to work in. Well, I did like helping others learn about and go solar, but I did not like the tactics they were using. Let’s face it, on some big decisions some people like time to think about things. I know I do! Some people may even want to get a second or third company to give them an offer. I know I would! In fact, the only reason in my mind that you wouldn’t want someone to look elsewhere is because you’re afraid of the competition. When you have a great product, fairly priced, you don’t have to operate in that way.
So, I left to find higher ground with a company that had a similar customer service philosophy as my own. Knowing what I wanted, and what I didn’t want now, I approached the solar industry with a different, more educated mindset.
What I decided to do, was to start my own solar consulting / contracting company where I didn’t have to answer to others for how I treated each of my clients. I was able to give my clients all the information, but none of the high-pressure sales tactics rampant in today’s solar marketplace. I liked the style I learned years back when I started out at the Ritz Carlton where we learned to anticipate and fulfill each customer’s needs. So now I could sell solar systems the way I wanted to sell solar systems and my clients can comfortably refer to me as the guy who has their best interests in mind, not some never ending bottom line.”
“ … I learn about each client’s needs and requirements, then provide unique solutions for them.”
When we asked David what motivated him to start his own business, he replied:
“I can run my business the way I want to, not the way some executive in New York, who personally couldn’t care less about my clients, wants me to run it. I love to inform people about options they have with solar! So many companies selling solar today sell cookie-cutter solar. They tell you enough about solar to get you excited, then in 5-10 min. they have someone in another country create a design for your home. Then you lease the system, only the next day you start to think about all the questions you still have! By contrast, I start by seeing if solar is possible for your home, then I ask you questions that will help lead me to provide the right product(s) for your home and meet your financial goals. I can present to you your best options for solar, or solar with back-up batteries, with the confidence that I am presenting you the best products on the market, designed specifically for your needs. This is one of the big differences that separates my business from hundreds of others selling solar. I also help many people who have been told that they can’t go solar by a company. I believe in rolling up my sleeves, and doing the networking required to help make their solar dreams come true. It may be more work, but it is also definitely more personally rewarding!
So that’s my business model; I learn about each client’s needs and requirements then provide unique solutions for them. Never cookie-cutter. I am there as a resource for them to ask questions as they make up their mind what’s best for them and their families.”
We asked how David’s business helped or benefited others and he answered:
“Wow, let’s start with lower electric costs to begin with! Solar provides cheaper, cleaner, price protected power. This gives my clients more money to spend on what’s important to them. It’s also the first time many of them have had a choice as to how they get their electricity. Now with batteries coming out for solar, it also offers them peace of mind knowing they will have power when the grid shuts down. Solar batteries are much quieter and much lower maintenance than noisy back-up generators. Solar is of course good for the Earth! It’s clean, renewable energy that produces zero greenhouse gases and doesn’t require vast amounts of water like fossil fuels. Not to mention it doesn’t have the baggage of nuclear energy. There is no radioactive waste to deal with! I also align myself with companies that have a cradle-to-cradle plan, or birth to rebirth plan for recycling old solar panels. In fact, each system that I sell, depending on the size of the solar system, is the equivalent of planting 100-200 trees each and every year it’s operating! So solar saves my clients lots of money and helps our fragile environment so they can feel great about that as well. It’s a win / win scenario!”
“Our consultation service is always free …”
“Not everyone who calls me can go solar. Only about 1 in 3 can for many reasons. It may be the design of the roof, shading, condition of the roof, or the direction of the roof. That said, I can still help many that are told they can’t go solar. Each home is unique and needs to be looked at individually. I can work with a tree removal service or a roofer to get the job done where others couldn’t be bothered. In fact, homeowners should check with their tax consultant because many can get great tax incentives off a new roof if needed, when they choose to go solar. So, we often give options where others simply move on. That’s what good customer service is. Our consultation service is always free, so it doesn’t cost anything to get the facts specifically for your home. You will know by the end of our consultation what you will save in writing, all about the warrantee, the product, and much more!”
David’s love for what he does and his passion for providing clean, cost-effective energy to his clients is just a small piece of what sets him apart from other solar companies. Contact him today to setup your free consultation at Suntastic Solutions
Mention Marilyn Riel or Menagerie Photography Studios and receive a free month of solar, upon install (not to be combined with any other offers).

Celebrating Local Women In Business Featuring Pam Patalano
Some know Pam as a mother of five, some know her as the driving force that helped save Pachaug State Forest. Others may know her as their Registrar of Voters or a Justice of the Peace. You may have seen her campaign signs around town for the Board of Education but most people don’t realize that all of these hats are worn by one amazing woman that owns and operates Tree of Life Holistic & Wellness Center located at 39 Wedgewood Dr. in Jewett City Connecticut and Full Circle, A Healing Space located at 650 Ten Rod Rd. in North Kingstown Rhode Island.
“Its not something that is a choice for me, but rather a calling to help others.”
“I am a mother of 5 children, Alexandria, Jasmine, Krystina, Jack & Christian. My boys still live at home. I have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and an associate’s degree in Graphic Design. I worked in the jewelry & textile industries for many years in a management capacity.
I have experienced many spiritual healings in my life. Clear signs that I was on a misguided path in my life journey. The signs never stopped and I felt an incredibly strong pull towards serving my fellow man. I learned about energy work and the healing that is possible. It’s not something that is a choice for me, but rather a calling to help others.
I started the holistic business in February of 2015 because there was a need in the area that I live in, for meditations, metaphysical and spiritual workshops, healing therapies, woman’s massage, Intuitive training, astral traveling and many other holistic interests. I felt it was time for me to spread my wings and open up.
“The benefits of mediation & massage are limitless. They help with mind-body balancing, lowering blood pressure, decreases anxiety, promotes healing, relaxation and increases overall well-being.”
We take a Spiritual approach to life-journey coaching. This is not your typical coaching session. The powers that be or one’s spirit guides are used within the sessions to assist the client in understanding the causes of their own trauma, stresses, and to help them to find a positive path in their lives through healing from the inside out.”

Celebrating Local Women In Business Featuring Sarah Doyle
Sarah is a Pure Romance consultant, serving Connecticut and surrounding areas. She’s been with Pure Romance for more than five years and is dedicated to bring education and confidence to women and their partners. She describes herself as a traveling boutique but she is much more than that, bringing her knowledge and helping couple with personal consultations.
Name: Sarah Doyle
Consultant for: Pure Romance, serving Connecticut and surrounding areas.
“The Pure Romance motto is “Empower, Educate, and Entertain”.
“In July of 2014, my husband (at the time) and I had just closed on our second home. We both had great jobs and owned a two-family we lived in, but decided we were ready for the next step in life and made the leap to buy a beautiful one family home in central CT. Within the first month of moving in, catastrophe struck and our main sewer line needed to be replaced! Several thousands of dollars later, our carefully planned budget went out the window. Following that, came a phone call that family needed a place to stay temporarily, so of course we opened up our two spare bedrooms to help out!
With two extra people living in the house and other unexpected events occurring, we started to have all these bills piling up, and needed a way to keep making ends meet without getting into debt too far over our heads – so I started looking at different options for a part-time job. While looking for a second job, I wanted something I could make my own hours, be my own boss, and control how much I was working while still making a decent amount of money to pay off our bills! There were so many I considered, but only one stood out as the BEST option with minimal risk & investment. The biggest drawback was that I am an introvert by nature, and I HATE public speaking – so I was terrified, but I told myself that it would only be temporary & once the bills were paid off, I would quit and go back to my 9-5 job. So, I took the leap, and joined Pure Romance!
Within 6 months I had won my first company paid trip to Las Vegas, and was having the time of my life, meeting new women, and making so much more money working part time than I would have picking up a “regular job”.
Eventually the bills were paid off, but I was building confidence and I wasn’t ready to quit! Almost 5 years later, I am now divorced, have been able to keep up on all my bills, afford to buy my own house, and I’m still going strong!
While I still work my 9-5 job, I continue to move my Pure Romance business forward because my dream is to one day quit my 9-5 and be a full-time mommy (hopefully ?). The opportunity of Pure Romance will help me obtain that goal, and still be able to afford to pay the bills. For now, Pure Romance helps me pay for the extras like trips around the world, such as the amazing safari vacation to Tanzania that I took in September 2017!
My number one inspiration is helping empower & educate women who struggle with understanding their bodies and realizing that there are so many of us that struggle with the same things. The topic of sex has been very taboo over the years, and too many women think that there is something wrong with them when their bodies don’t respond the way we are conditioned to think it should by all the television, movies, books, etc.!
I help women become more comfortable in understanding their body’s reactions, and provide them with products to enhance their bedroom experience. We should be able to discuss intimacy needs with our partners, and not be shy about taking back our confidence (and orgasms?) in and out of the bedroom!
If you have never heard of Pure Romance, we do in home parties for women 18+ and offer something for everyone! We have bath & beauty items, bedroom enhancers, and amazing lingerie.
Pure Romance by Sarah is a traveling boutique. I bring products and inventory to the comfort of your own home, and can also do personal consultations for you and your partner.
If you mention this article, receive 10% off your entire order and/or 20% off any lingerie for your boudoir photo session with Marilyn Riel! Get your ladies together for an in-home party, and get $50 in free products (plus other discounts and freebies) as a THANK YOU! ?
*This offer is through Pure Romance by Sarah Doyle and is not valid on website. Please contact me via email, cell, or social media to take advantage of these specials!”

Celebrating Local Women In Business Featuring Lauren Nadwairski
Today I want to introduce you to Lauren Nadwairski who owns and operates Tiger Strength Performance in Baltic, CT. Lauren’s dedication to her clients goes far beyond getting them physically fit. Her philosophy is a balance of both physical and mental health. Her gym is the epitome of judgment free and is very kid friendly for clients that want to get healthy but can’t find a babysitter or just want to include their children in their workout.
“Not only do I help clients reach their physical goals by combining working out and meal plans, but I provide a safe place they can bring their children as well. There is a gated kid’s area with toys that parents can see from all areas of the gym. At Tiger Strength Performance, it’s not only about your physical health, but your mental health as well.”
“The reason I’m passionate about what I do is I grew up getting made fun of because of my weight. It was always fluctuating, and I was never happy with myself. As an adult, I was in an unhealthy relationship, unhappy with my body, and depressed. I finally decided to do something about my life at the age of 23.
I signed up to workout at my local women’s gym and had no idea what I was doing and needed guidance and support since my boyfriend at that time was not backing me in my new journey.
In less than a year, I lost almost 100 pounds… and the boyfriend! In the process of my own personal journey, I was hired at the gym where I was working out. Quickly promoted to manager, I knew I had found my passion. I met an amazing man who actually owned his own personal training business and we started our life together!
After a series of humbling events, I found myself without a job. My boyfriend and I decided that I would be a great addition to his business! In 2015 I received my national certification to become a personal trainer.
After a tragic life changing event, I found myself taking on Tiger Strength Performance by myself. I was scared and doubted myself, but I took the jump. In 2016, I opened my first gym, which was open for 2 years until my clientele needed a bigger, better space!
Tiger Strength Performance has been in business since 2014 and my latest gym located in Baltic CT. was opened in 2018 and we now have about 3000 square feet of space.
Not only do I help clients reach their physical goals by combining working out and meal plans, but I provide a safe place they can bring their children as well. There is a gated kid’s area with toys that parents can see from all areas of the gym. At Tiger strength Performance, it’s not only about your physical health, but your mental health as well.”
Lauren’s knowledge of her industry, love of exercise and all things fitness, as well as her desire to be an active part of her community has set her and her business apart from typical “Big Box” gyms. Make your appointment with her at Tiger Strength Performance in Baltic! Mention you read this article and get $15 off your first package!

Welcome to our Celebrating Local Women in Business blog! We are focusing on local Connecticut businesses owned and run by women. The blogs will give you a chance to learn about the women who own these businesses, why they chose the work they do, what drove them to transform that passion into their own business and how their business has a positive impact on others. In this blog we’re Celebrating Local Women in Business featuring Marilyn Riel.
I’ve been publishing articles about women in business over the last few months and was reminded the other day that as a woman who owns my business, I should be including an article about myself as well. So here it is; my story and the answers to a few of the questions I’ve been asked about why I do what I do!
Name: Marilyn Riel
Business Name and Address: Menagerie Photography, Lisbon, CT
“I believe empowering women to see their
individual beauty is key to their self-confidence.”
Let me start by introducing myself to those of you who don’t know me yet. I’m 50+ years old and owner and lead photographer at Menagerie Photography Studio in Lisbon, CT. I love the work I do now but it wasn’t always that way. I was married young, had three children, got divorced, remarried six years ago and have two beautiful granddaughters.
It took a long time to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up but I finally got here!
When I tell people that my studio is exclusively women’s portraiture, often they don’t understand why weddings, engagements and babies aren’t part of the services I provide. Simply put, I have done various types of photography but this is what I love to do. Having come from a past that had me feeling less than confident or empowered, focusing the business at my studio on women’s portraiture is important to me.
I believe empowering women to see their individual beauty is key to their self-confidence. Many of the women who wanted to come in to the studio had a list of excuses that they would tell me. “I’m shy… but I don’t know if this is the right gift for my significant other… well, I need to lose weight or get in shape first…”
What it all came down to was a fear they would not be seen as beautiful.
The thing they were missing was that they were already beautiful – no matter what shape or size, they just needed to see themselves as I saw them through my lens. I wanted them to know that it’s not just about having beautiful pictures at the end of your session; it’s also about how you feel during and after the shoot. Most women leave with an overall good feeling about themselves, not just that they have great pictures but that they have a great time and they’re more confident than ever.
This is why I shoot exclusively women’s portraiture.
I am kept busy with photo sessions for all types of images including fashion/editorial, pinup/fantasy, boudoir/glamour, maternity and business headshots as well as writing the blogs for my business. While talking about the Women in Business blogs at an event I was asked how much I charge to do the articles – taking photos, posting to our web page with links to their businesses and social media as well as digital copies of the images used in the blogs. I told them I do it for free. Their response was “well for now, you could make good money doing that…”
Why would you give away something when you can sell it?
There are many businesses and individuals who share of themselves, their time, their skills or their money to make things better for others. Giving back to their communities is something they do for themselves, not for monetary gain but to feel they may make a small difference by their actions. Many of the women I have recently featured in my blogs donate their time and services to improve their communities and help others at no cost. I share their stories to spread the word about their businesses, providing my services and time at no cost to them.
I believe in the philosophy “pass it on and it comes back to you”.
Recently I was asked why we have photography campaigns twice a year with no session fee and a free image. It’s pretty simple really. There are women out there who would love to experience a professional photo shoot but can’t afford it. Women who want to see themselves as confident and beautiful. This gives a chance to have that experience without the cost. They get to choose one of their pictures to remember the fun they had! After their session, there is no obligation to purchase any other images. (They can if they want to but it is not required)
The stories I have received in women’s campaign entries have made me realize how important it is to make time in my business to give more women a session that can empower them and help build their confidence.
I can’t give all my sessions away or I would go out of business. I can offer to wave the session fee for a few women during these campaigns. When I have the services of a hair and makeup artist donated this is include in a campaign as well. The expressions on women’s faces when they see images of themselves that show their individual beauty is wonderful. Feedback from the women who have participated in our events lets me know this is something I will continue to do in the future. An email I received two months after our first campaign last fall sums up the reason I continue to do this.
“Hi Marilyn!
I just wanted to email you and see how you have been doing? …. I don’t remember if I told you… I like how the photos came out and I am so very proud of them. Also I wanted to let you know that since I have seen you, my confidence has risen. I absolutely love that we had a chance to meet. You are definitely an inspiration. “
I have had such wonderful feedback from the women who have participated. I hope, at least in some small way, that I have been able to give them a little more confidence. That their photo shoot has left them feeling more empowered and just overall happier as the amazing women they are.
Our studio guide cover girls normally come from the women who participate in these campaigns. All the women sign model releases authorizing us to use their images. This allows us to share their experience so you can see what fun they had and their beautiful pictures. I have had the privilege of meeting over a dozen amazing women through the various campaigns so far.
We just closed entries for our third campaign and I look forward to sharing images and stories from their sessions next month.
I hope this has helped you to get to know me a little better and that when you are ready to talk about getting your photo taken, you’ll give me a call. You’ll come in for some coffee or tea and we can talk about creating an experience that you’ll love with beautiful pictures you can take home and share.

Today I’m introducing you to Stephanie Ortiz who owns and operates The Fancy Fluke Fishing Co. in Stratford, Connecticut. Fancy Fluke Fishing Co. creates and sells customized tackle and tackle inspired accessories for girls and women who love to fish! They currently have a Women’s Only Fluke Tournament scheduled for Summer 2017 at Burrs Marina in New London and have another in the works in Milford, CT. If you think that is all Stephanie has planned you haven’t seen her energy, enthusiasm and dedication to her company and the women she hopes to inspire. She also plans to offer teaching clinics for women and children interested in learning the “How-To” of angling in Connecticut and is in the process of creating a program of Girls Only Charters. So read on to hear Stephanie’s story about how she got started and how she wants to share this with others.
” I found 6 amazing women who shared my vision and created a team… I am positive that those who see these women and get to know their lives will gain a new respect for the “Why” of fishing. In that way we will inspire other women to try our sport. We have opened up our lives to teach and include them. In that way we are empowering female anglers by giving them the guidance they need to excel and enjoy themselves on the water.”
“The Fancy Fluke literally started as a Fluke. I had made some glamorous fishing rigs for myself for fishing trip off of Block Island. One of the reasons I really got into angling was for the food! I am extremely passionate about Ocean to Table cooking and Fluke are some of the best eating around! Any opportunity I have to catch Fluke I try my best to fish hard and put dinner on the table. That particular trip was a SLAMMER! We limited out in under two hours all BIG FLUKE 20-29” and all on my Fancy Fluke Rigs. I knew if I could hit it out of the park fluking Block I had a great rig in my hands.
I knew my Fluke Rigs were my golden ticket into the world of Sport Fishing in Connecticut. I’m by no means the greatest angler but I fish often.. Some weeks everyday, other times for days at a time. Experience is king and I’ve gained quite a bit. This year alone I’ve caught Bluefin Tuna, White Marlin and Mako. I’ve also beat my personal best Fluke and Bluefish. I may not score on every species, but if you want a lady who can fight a shark from start to finish, I’m your woman. I didn’t stop there…
My Fluke Rigs had a great summer with tons of positive feedback from anglers all over the state. Our Rigs snagged not only Fluke, but Scup, Black Sea Bass, Striper and Blues.
Fancy Fluke Fishing Co. is dedicated to creating and selling customized tackle and tackle inspired accessories for girls and women who love to fish! All of our Fluke Rigs are made with the highest quality materials including Addya 4/0 Wide Gap Hooks, Berkley Big Game Monofilment 30lb and various hardware, bucktails, teasers and squid skirts from Buccaneer, Sea Striker and other fine tackle producers. Our Fluke Rigs are designed for jigging and drifting for Fluke and other bottom fishing. We test our products locally in Long Island Sound and deeper waters around Block Island. Our designs employ a large array of bead-work and specialty knots. Silver, semi-precious stones and genuine crystal are matched with tails and teasers to create a one of a kind piece you can use over and over again. All of our products are handmade in Stratford, Connecticut, USA.
We are currently available in stores at:
Diane’s Bait, Tackle & Charters in New London,CT
Fisherman’s Paradise in Milford, CT
Animal Artisans in Stratford,CT
Once I got my product in shops, I knew my next step was to create a strong, safe community for women to experience this sport and on a deeper level the lifestyle. I found 6 amazing women who shared my vision and created a team, namely Lauren Salvioli, Diane Womack, Kim Granite, Niki Webber, Captain Stephanie Griffith and Jennifer Zuppe. In my opinion these women are extremely inspiring and at the same time the best examples of excellence in angling in Connecticut. I am positive that those who see these women and get to know their lives will gain a new respect for the “Why” of fishing. In that way we will inspire other women to try our sport. We have opened up our lives to teach and include them. In that way we are empowering female angler by giving them the guidance they need to excel and enjoy themselves on the water.

I also am in the process of creating a program of Girls Only Charters, this is a great way for boats to link up with potential life-long patrons. We want to offer a charter experience that caters specifically to female anglers of all levels.
The other important piece to the Fancy Fluke puzzle is our site – TheFancyFluke.com. We provide content ranging from recipes, tips and tricks of the trade, photo gallery, shop and what I am most proud of, our Fishing Reports written by female fishermen. My hope is we become well known as a source for interesting and reliable information pertaining to the sport. At the same time, I know that we will inspire many women, men and their families by empowering them to explore with us a passion for this Salty Satisfying way of life.”
Stephanie’s love of fishing and desire to share her knowledge and passion has created an amazing company that not only hires women for her team but strives to spread the word that there is not anything you can’t do if you work hard. She promotes independence and self-sufficiency while honoring families and tradition.

Today I’m introducing you to Jessica Odaynik who owns and operates jesslancephoto in Plainfield, CT. Jess has worked in a variety of photography styles and has chosen to focus her business around what she loves most – weddings. She has a style that reflects her personality and has a personality that makes you like her from the first time you meet her. Jess loves sharing these special moments with a couple and captures amazing images for them to cherish.
“I enjoy giving couples a chance to relive their wedding day. Everything goes by so fast and most of the time I show them moments they had missed. My goal is to make the photography process as simple and fun as possible.”
“Growing up I was the baby in my family, aka designated flower girl. I remember the wedding photographers always interrupting! The mother of the bride would be helping her daughter into her dress and the photographer would say okay, stop, hold it, great, now do that one more time….okay now from this side, look at me… smile! Same thing during the first dance, cake cutting… pretty much any important moment. I loved photography from a young age but decided I never ever wanted to be a wedding photographer, because they ruined the moment. Ironically now I spend most of my weekends May-November photographing weddings and loving every second!
When I graduated from the New England Institute of Art in 2010 I saw myself working for magazines or in a museum. My husband’s job brought us to Miami, FL and I began working with a commercial photographer working on ads for Burger King. It sounded like the greatest job ever but I soon discovered that commercial photography had little to do with photography and knew it wasn’t for me. As a military spouse I made some great friends while stationed in Miami. They found out I was a photographer and would ask if I could take some photos of their families. At the time I didn’t think of that as a career, more of a way to meet new people. One day I received an email that said “I wanted to thank you for the photos of my granddaughter. It’s so hard being away from her but your photos made me feel like I was there with her. They capture her just how she is, bubbly and silly and full of energy” That’s when I started to realize I was doing more than just taking pictures of people, I was capturing memories for them.
When we moved back home to Connecticut in 2013 I started to pursue portrait and wedding photography. Three years later I’m happy to call this my full-time job, with a studio in Plainfield and specializing in weddings. As for my “fear” of ruining the moment as a wedding photographer? Well past brides have said “Jess captured all the special moments of the wedding and I didn’t even know she was taking photos at the time! She’s great during the wedding without really being seen or heard.” “She has the amazing philosophy of taking things in as they happen, rather than forcing them. All in all, it leads to wonderful photos that truly capture the events and emotions of the day.”
The wedding experience with jesslancephoto is full service. I meet with couples right after their engagement (sometimes even at the proposal!), they come to the studio to discuss their wedding plans and I pass along all my favorite vendor’s information for florists, caterers, makeups, etc. Engagement sessions are typically done at one of their favorite places and they receive a hard cover book that doubles as a guest book at the wedding. As the big day gets closer we do a walkthrough at their venue to finalize all the best spots for portraits and create a timeline for the day to ensure every moment is captured. I’m usually one of the first vendors to arrive and almost last to leave but I love the whirlwind of the day. A low-res preview is available for the couple within the first week and they’re able to favorite any images they’d like edited first. Four to six weeks later they receive their final gallery and are invited back to the studio to start creating their wedding album and wall art. I enjoy giving couples a chance to relive their wedding day. Everything goes by so fast and most of the time I show them moments they had missed. My goal is to make the photography process as simple and fun as possible. I love when past couples call me for their other big life events….pregnancy, birth, military homecomings, anniversaries, family member’s engagements and more.
I try to give back when I can. I’ve donated my services to animal shelters looking for fun photos to help the adoption process, military homecomings and Chamber of Commerce events. I’m active in the Rose City BNI chapter and look forward to helping with more causes in the future!”
This photo of two canvases Jess made can’t do justice to seeing them in person. The fact that she loves what she does shines through in the photos she takes.
